Well-known for its unique building designed by the architect Tadao Ando, this museum is situated to the northwest of Himeji Castle. South Building houses 'Visual Exhibition Room' featuring realistic images with a 150-inch screen, a nine-screen multiple system and a bodysonic system as well as 'Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Room' and 'Library'.
North Building contains 'Harima Mandala', which introduces cultural aspects of the Harima area like a picture scroll on a semi-circular 7-meter-high and 60-meter-long wall, and 'Bunjin (writer) Exhibition Room'. 'Bokeitei', a renovated Japanese house built in the Taisho period is within the compound. The observatory in North Building commands a panoramic view.
